Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
