In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The September uprising was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Discussions Taking Place
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
