Additionally, a flourishing market exists on messaging services, where communities with thousands of members share “before and after” images, injection guides and claims of rapid British shipping. Sellers promote the drug there before redirecting buyers to WhatsApp for purchases.
Understanding The Experimental Drug
This medication is an experimental injectable created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug affects three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies suggest it could assist individuals lose up to 25% of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted online as the next Ozempic.
Medical Experts Express Worries
However, physicians and chemists have cautions that the sale of what is still an unlicensed drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could result in users injecting substances of unknown origin.
Several experts stated the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the rising price of approved slimming products such as Mounjaro.

Selling the unapproved drug on TikTok or messaging apps is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unlicensed drug that must not be promoted or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Some content creators attempt to sidestep the regulations by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted drug, but advertising and supply can still violate pharmaceutical, advertising, and customer laws, potentially leading to fines, prosecution or imprisonment.
Platform Reaction and Material Elimination
According to TikTok, the platform has taken down problematic content and prohibited related hashtags and search suggestions. The company stated it was dedicated to maintaining the platform secure and allocating resources in strengthening enforcement strategies.
Digital Marketplace Operations
Research also found communities with up to nine thousand members selling retatrutide using Telegram's integrated search feature, which functions like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” instantly displays groups with numerous of members, filled with photos of weight loss, glowing testimonials and detailed guides for preparing or injecting at residence.
After minutes of entering one community, a seller posted contact information, where most transactions take place. The vendor provided an instruction manual and promised delivery within two days. When asked whether the substance was authentic, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a supposed testing documentation. Not one asked about body mass, health issues or past usage.
Product Details and Pricing
Within these communities, posts show dark colored packages with Royal Mail labels, claiming to include new batches. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, prepared at residence with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors usually priced at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When asked how long a pen should last, vendors give contradictory answers ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Service Oversight and Security Measures
A spokesperson for Telegram stated it regularly moderated dangerous content on its platform including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Professional Cautions
“Individuals are injecting materials they cannot confirm. Even if the science behind this drug is valid, these online versions may not contain what they advertise,” stated a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the increase in interest to current cost increases for approved weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are turning to online platforms. But counterfeit injections are highly dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the environment they were produced in was sterile,” she explained.
Her staff has already seen patients injured by self-injection from unverified sources. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from Telegram or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” stated Wyllie. “These materials could be impure or improperly measured.”
Producer Statement
A spokesperson from Eli Lilly said retatrutide was in phase 3 research studies and had not been reviewed or authorized by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this time no one can sell [it] for human use,” they said, adding that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly experimental substance not yet authorized … may subject users to potentially significant health risks”.
