The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.
The ex-president was convicted of plotting a armed takeover in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.
This included trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns
In a document approving the custody, the magistrate said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his escape.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.
His child, Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or see it all from your phone there on your sofa? I call on you to battle with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the magistrate's decision was the possibility of Bolsonaro's transfer to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.
The court filing underscores that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 13km from his dwelling.
International Reactions
Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist United States President Trump, causing him to enact a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.
Bolsonaro is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the next day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be permitted to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he needed ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other ailments.
Background on Conviction
He was determined responsible of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plan which involved plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.
The conspiracy was stopped because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was took office without issue on January 1st, 2023.
But a following week, on 8 January, thousands of his followers attacked and damaged public facilities in the capital, the capital city.
The police stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.
The magistrates found that the rioters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, restore order and return him to office.
At the time, the legal team called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The ex-leader called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
