Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional physical horror, but within Together lies a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when the couple transition from the metropolis to the country for her career. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform at present.
