Trump's Woke Alarm Misses The Continent's True Danger: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas pose an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The true challenge confronting the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

Statistics paint a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, about 50% of the global top fifty technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

This widening economic gap stems from stronger productivity growth in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at over $10bn, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a vital issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Experts widely agree it is largely a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of key reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and agile network for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under one regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among 27 separate regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for sweeping changes.

With the right policies and rule changes, these assets might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains considerable advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation technologies, it can still significantly increase economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been steady. But, if it fails to take decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
